Im getting ready to narrow a D44 chevy axle. And I want to keep it to a stock length so i can get factory axles. About the width of a CJ is what im after. Im planning on doing this to keep all the parts stock, No custom parts. Good info needed please

Check out my latest post on my project build: Trooper evolution. I narrowed a '76 Chevy 44 to a '77 Waggy 44 width to clock it, and still use all the upgraded axles from the Waggy. The easiest way I would suggest is to tear both axles down. Run your tape measurer through each tube (either side of the diff), and measure the lenght of the actual tube you want to narrow to. This is the only sure fire way to get the exact length without mathmatically complicating it. The diffs should be the same internally, but you have probably already noticed the outsides are much different.

If you want any specific measurements while I still have it torn down, I am more then happy to do so. I spent months researching this, and I know I am no expert. But, I do feel confident in what I am talking about. I kind of wish I narrowed the Chevy SOA D44 before even buying the Waggy SUA D44. It is a very simple process, as long as your measurements are right on. I think the Waggy is 63" WMS to WMS? Oh, and I believe it is Rick's ring and pinion who sells a complete 30 spline 4340 axle set for $500 (inners and outers) for the Waggy.
Again, if there is anything else I can help you with, just ask.

FYI - Jeep never put a D44 under the front of a a CJ, hence having to cut everything to fit. I do think they are using them in the Rubicons though. I Googled "narrowing a Dana 44" and came up with a wealth of info!

Scott, I believe you are right... 'cause you had a D30. I think the Rubi was the only model intended to be "hardcore" trail ready. The walkthrough I found was extremely detailed, but he was narrowing it for a scout. I tried to find the link for you, but it was dead. It was Randy's Ring and Pinion I was thinking of earlier (that is what I get for trying to remember on a computer that didn't have my favorites library). Here is the link to the Waggy axles: http://www.ringpinion.com/PartsList.asp ... 15&CatID=1My front 1977 Jeep wagoneer Dana 44 measures: From tube end to tube end is 45 1/8" From top of C to C is 49 5/8" The tube long side is 27 3/4" The tube short side is 9 2/16" And again, the C bracket needs to be at least 1/8" out from the tube for clearence.

I just bought 2 Scout D44 axles. I can get measurments tonight if you want. They are still all together but I can get outside measurments. I think the wms to wms is 59", I would have to check.
Edit again - CJ is 53" wms to wms.
I would think you could find a used Scout axle cheaper than trying to narrow a fullsize.

I think John Nutter's writeup says it pretty well: http://www.jeeptech.com/convaxle/sjd44front.htmlSeems like I have seen a Scout Axle for sale somewhere, let me look around. But i'm not really sure that it would be better than a GM axle, Scout parts are getting more expensive all the time, if you can find them. They also have the external bolt on lockouts, that aren't as strong as the internal style.

One thing I liked about the Chevy versus the Waggy was how the Chevy is already setup for spring over. That saves you from having to grind and measure your day away on the housing to do a SOA. Run them full width and be like this guy: http://s956.photobucket.com/albums/ae45 ... -25080.flv

Well I found a pair of matching scout II axles, and he threw in a set of 4" lift springs for nothing. Im supposed to pick them up sat. I really dont plan on beating this rig, or driving it My wife wanted it so its her rig, I just weld on it and wrench on it
